Why are you running? I’m running first, to retain my seat as the elected incumbent from the 9th Senate District of the State of Ohio. In 2013, I made a conscious decision to run for my current position because I cared deeply about the quality of life of citizens living in Greater Cincinnati and the State of Ohio. I also recognized that after spending over forty years in public service addressing quality of life issues, there was still work to be done. I sincerely believed that I was living out my life’s purpose in working to make Ohio a much better place for all it’s citizens; from the wealthiest to the poorest.
I’m the best candidate because I’m the endorsed candidate of the Democratic Party having approximately forty-four years of public service serving the City of Cincinnati and the State of Ohio. I spent 27 years in law enforcement, five years as executive director of the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, 8 years as a member of Cincinnati City Council and I’m currently in my fourth years as State Senator. In my first four years in the Senate, I have successfully worked in a bi-partisan manner to sponsored or cosponsored over 319 bills. I’m currently a member of the Democratic Caucus leadership team as the Assistant Minority Whip. I’m the ranking minority member on the Judiciary Committee and Local Government, Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee. I’ve received the endorsements of numerous labor and public policy organizations. I’m recognized around the statehouse for my ability to work across the aisle to get things done. I’ve maintained a 98.2% attendance record.
1. 1. The Republican controlled Ohio Legislator has been quick to offer job creation tax credits to businesses. However, because of loopholes in the law, many of these tax credits have resulted in higher deficits with limited job creation. For example, Ohio had a deficit of over $1 billion. In that same budget bill, Ohio legislators gave a huge tax break to pass-through entity owners. This tax break costs the state $1.1 billion a year. Seemed like a simple fix to the budget hole were to eliminate this tax break that wasn’t creating the expected jobs. Instead, the legislature passed that huge tax break. The first $250,000 is free from state income taxes. Even if you don’t hire a single employee. This tax giveaway has to be eliminated. It’s simply, “free money.” 2. Ohio should also return the local government funds and other tax changes made at the state level to pre-2010 levels. These changes have cost local governments $1.2 billion resulting in cuts, layoffs and increase tax levies.
I would definitely oppose any effort to repeal the expansion of Medicaid. The expansion has helped over half a million low-income Ohioans – including children, the mentally ill and the drug-addicted to have access to health insurance. It’s the right thing to do.
Ohio abortion laws are too restrictive. The United States Supreme Court in Roe v Wade has ruled on the abortion issue and it is the law of the land. However, some in Ohio continue seek to circumvent the law by passing other restrictive measures. Many of these restrictions are endangering the health and safety of the woman.
