I promise to remain committed to policies that further strengthen our public schools and give them the resources they need and to make charter schools more accountable for public tax dollars. I promise to remain committed to reduce/eliminate state-mandated testing, expand career-tech/graduation options, and promote problem-based learning and the Arts for all students. I promise to remain committed to encourage innovative and challenging education environments that place high quality teaching and learning at their heart.
As a current member of the State Board of Education (2015-present), I believe we are at a seminal moment in Ohio’s Education System. I want to continue to help shape the reform efforts of which I have been intricately involved. With the end of the No Child Left Behind era of repressive testing and over-reaching regulations, we can reinvent the Ohio Department of Education as a service-based partner with school districts and position ODE again as a top world-class system. The 2016 hire of Paolo DeMaria as State Superintendent, our current board's desire to speak as one voice for all students, and significant stakeholders’ input in our reform processes have led to our 5-Year Strategic Plan: Each Child-Our Future and Ohio’s Every Student Succeeds (ESSA) Plan. These documents will provide a framework for local districts to design continuous improvement plans that honor the development of the whole child through a well-rounded education, prepared to successfully pursue their career path.
A career art teacher in the Northwest Local School District (1974-2004) and leadership roles noted above have prepared me to be an engaged and effective elected member on the State BOE. My votes are based on evidence-based research and constant contact with my constituents. My current leadership roles include membership on the Executive, Accountability & Continuous Improvement, Achievement & Graduation Requirements Committees and Alternative Assessments Impact Team. As a member of the Strategic Plan process, I served on the Steering Committee and Excellent Educators & Best Practices Work Group that involved over 1400 stakeholders’ input. I also sit on the Report Card and Graduation Requirements Workgroups.
I would be honored to continue as your District 4 SBOE member and to support an education system that honors the work everyday of dedicated educators, parents, and community partners who encourage all our great students to DREAM BIG!
I graduated from Deer Park High School, Xavier University with a M.Ed., and Miami University with a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and am extremely knowledgeable of the needs of our local school districts. Currently, I teach undergraduate students at Miami University and Cincinnati Christian University, as well as, graduate students at Indiana Wesleyan who aspire to become educators. Previously, I taught middle school language fifteen years, at Landmark Christian School.
I have been elected to the Village of Glendale Council since 2004, currently serve as Vice Mayor. I serve on West Point Society, Cincinnati Board of Directors; West Point Leadership & Ethics Seminar Planning Committee; Mid-Western Educational Research Association Board; Hamilton County Watershed Oversight Board; First Suburbs Consortium of Hamilton County Executive Board; and Connecting Active Communities Coalition Board. My extensive experience in education, history of community involvement, and investment in public service make me a valuable resource to represent you and your family on the Ohio Board of Education.

I am running because I have a career of experience contributing in my community as an elected official and with SW Ohio municipalities on various executive committees, as well as interacting with university students and working professionals who aspire to become teachers, gaining firsthand knowledge and perspective that will benefit Ohio students and their families.
