Public space should be preserved and reasonably be made available for the expression of political views. As to marijuana I will continue to exercise reasonable and compassionate discretion in prosecution decisions.
This reform was initiated by the NC State Legislature and has been embraced here in Buncombe County. I also started an early in-custody misdemeanor dismissal program which has reduced jail population in the last year.
To increase fairness, my office has enacted the early electronic dismissal program that has released hundreds in non-violent misdemeanors. We must limit use of jail space to those who are a danger to the public.
It's my policy to request neutral investigative assistance in these cases. Where a conflict of interest or appearance of impropriety exists, I will request the assistance of the AG's office or another DA in the case.
