What are some steps you would take to keep incarcerated individuals safe and connected to family members and the community? (40 words max)

What do you believe is the appropriate level of collaboration between federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Sheriff’s office? (30 words max)

Experience (35 words max) 30+ Years in law enforcement beginning in Randolph County in 1984. At Duke University served 17 years, 7 years of which as police chief; Chief of Police in Hillsborough, NC for 7 years; Police Executive/Consultant 2+ years.
Ensure fair and humane treatment of individuals and facilitate face-to-face time to visit with family based on individual needs. Review current jail policies and revise, train, and reorganize to meet industry best practices.
I will not honor ICE detainers based on the fact that detaining individuals without a warrant is unconstitutional. By law, I am required, and will honor, any warrants presented by ICE agents.
While I do support civilian boards, I believe much research is needed before I would be willing to grant subpoena-power to a civilian board.
Ensure deputies receive racial bias training and use data to monitor/flag disparities.
