Experience (35 words max) Native of Ashe County, earned graduate and undergraduate degrees from Appalachian State University. Was a teacher and principal for 33 years. Prior public service: Town Alderman, Board of Education, two four-year terms as a commissioner, and High Country Council of Governments member.
Goals are: - to promote unity, cooperation, coalition building, display empathy, emphasize networking, and serve with good intentions -to emphasize economic development -to support education - to be issue oriented -to serve the disenfranchised and veterans
- to work with federal, state, and regional agencies to tap into programs - to emphasize better paying jobs by promoting a strong economy - establish an Affordable Housing Committee to monitor local needs
The availability of jobs depends on the status of the economy. Workforce development (education, training, etc.) must be emphasized. Employers must be aware of labor laws; federal, state, regional and local.
My stance will be to abide by any and all federal immigration enforcement rules.
The sheriff is an elected official and can develop his own policies. The commissioners should work with the sheriff to promote transparency and accountability. Commissioners control the sheriff's budget.
