We need an overhaul of our health care system, which is just too expensive for our residents. I support the idea of a single-payer system, but not at the cost of $400 billion a year for taxpayers. Perhaps we could implement reforms more slowly.
The housing shortage is caused by a high demand and low inventory of for-sale and rental homes. We need to build more affordable units, preferably near public transit. We also need to get more creative encouraging housing - not the NIMBY approach.
Before this year, we haven't had an increase in the gas tax for decades - and our roads, highways and public transit infrastructure are crumbling. We need the money to make roads and bridges safe - but the money must be guaranteed for transportation.
What the voters approved has proved to be so much more expensive. I do not support spending tax dollars on high-speed rail when we need it for more important programs - such as schools, roads, law enforcement, energy-efficient projects, etc.
I serve on the Joint Legislative Committee on Climate Change Policies and am very concerned about the effects of global warming. California is at the forefront of this effort, and I will continue working to support policies to combat global warming.
I disagree with efforts to release offenders early back into our communities. We see the effect firsthand in higher home and car burglary rates and increases in petty crimes. Criminals commit these crimes knowing that they won't go to jail.
